Mount St. Michael

Restoration Projects

Historic Mount St. Michael is a 100-year building that needs lots of TLC. With any old building there are many projects and ongoing maintenance issues.

Smaller Projects:

A recent project was the set-up of our Museum Room in what was once used as the science classroom by the Jesuits here at Mount St. Michael. The carpet was pulled up and the original hardwood floors were restored to their original beauty. The walls were freshly painted and small and large artifacts into the museum for all to see, just in time for our Open House on January 17th and 18th. There is still much detail work to be done and it is a work in progress, but we encourage you to come and visit and see it for yourself.

Currently we are giving our first and second floor restrooms a small “face lift” with new paint, sinks and faucets. All of the restrooms in the Mount have original fixtures and are in great need of replacing. But with limited funds we can only do so much at a time.

Another project that is underway is the re-plastering of the ceiling in the entrance of the Mount. Due to old water damage and mold, the ceiling needed a lot of scraping and prep work before new plaster and molding could be put up. It is not finished as of yet, but soon the ceiling will look as good as it did 100 years ago.

Large Project:

One of our large and monumental projects that we need to focus on is the parapet of the building; that is the top edge of the building. The terracotta finish and mortar between the bricks is in bad shape and is falling off. Also, the large crosses that rest on top of the building are ready to fall. The rebar that holds them is rusted and one of the crosses fell off many years ago. We would like to replace it and fix the mortar and the parapet. We are currently awaiting bids for this project, but we estimate this project to be in the hundreds of thousands.
