The Mount’s Centennial Celebration (1915-2015)

Some historic dates to be aware of as we prepare for
       Mount St. Michael’s Centennial (1915-2015)

Dec. 17, 1913 The diocese of Spokane is established by decree of Pope St. Pius X.
Feb. 11, 1914 Establishment of new diocese officially announced to the people in Spokane (patronal feast of the diocese’s cathedral)
March 18, 1914 Pope St. Pius X appoints Bishop Augustine Francis Schinner as first bishop of the diocese.
April 18, 1914 Bishop Schinner enthroned as Bishop of his new diocese.
Aug. 20, 1914 Pope Pius X died, some say of a broken heart. World War I had begun in late July, with Austro-Hungary invading Serbia, and by August 1, the major belligerents were at war.
Aug. 24, 1914 Ground is broken for the building of Mt. St. Michael.

As Americans, we share a legacy built upon freedom, opportunity and a commitment to moral integrity. Mount St. Michael, a traditional Catholic institute, is dedicated to the preservation of these ideals and is a symbol of hope in maintaining our rich heritage for future generations.

The Mount has been a landmark in the Pacific Northwest for 100 years. Constructed in 1915, the Mount served as a scholasticate for the Society of Jesus until 1968. In its heyday, Mount St. Michael was virtually a self-contained city. A 700-acre farm fed a community of almost 250 men — Jesuit priests, seminarians and religious Brothers — and provided a retreat for Jesuits in need of a rest.

In 1968 Mount St. Michael closed its doors as a scholasticate. The drastic drop in vocations that came in the wake of the Vatican II Council made the operation of such a large facility for the few remaining scholastics impractical. The scholasticate moved back to Gonzaga University and the Mount was used as a residence for a few priests and as an ecumenical center.

In 1977 developers were planning to purchase this important historical and spiritual landmark and convert the property to commercial uses. To preserve this historical and spiritual part of Spokane’s heritage, a small group of traditional Catholics, at great personal sacrifice, purchased Mount St. Michael in December of 1977.

Today, Mount St. Michael is maintained by the religious of the Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen and remains a monument to Christian education. It currently houses a private K-12 academy which upholds a high standard of academic achievement founded upon the Christian and moral virtues. In every aspect of the curriculum, the animating principle is the same: to know, love and serve God.

By striving to impart to our students an abiding faith and love of God, respect for themselves and others, and a true love of country, we are ensuring the preservation of the ideals we treasure.

This is our heritage and the commitment we honor at Mount St. Michael,...

where Tradition Endures.
